MATERIALITY

Each of our designs start with curiosity and a pure interest in the nature of materiality. How does the human hand transform a raw material? How can we make something truly new with minimal impact? Can it be beautiful, luxurious, tell a story, be a talisman?

The enjoyment derived by the artistic process is embedded in each piece. The emotion and intention are woven into the fibers.

02 PROCESS

Stella Fluorescent designs are steeped in a significant process. Each piece of jewelry or accessory is hand crafted—from the dying of the silk to the hand braiding, the making of the paint to the hand forging of the metal elements. Every process is replicated with great care on a small scale, one object at a time. An exact opposite of mass manufacturing.

We use natural dying to minimize our effect on our water system and eliminate toxic and harsh chemicals from the materials that are meant to be worn on the body. We source materials with environmental responsibility in mind, which means we use natural fibers, vintage textiles, and repurpose our scraps and off-cuts into new designs.

SUSTAIN

We view sustainability through many lenses, and consider the impact of each product that we put out into the world. We think a lot about how to internalize the social and ecological cost of creating new product. We manufacture locally which gives us the ability to do small runs and avoid shipping to and from far off factories. This also creates and broadens our connection with the community of makers right around us.

We regularly collaborate with like minded designers and artisans. Collaborating allows for an exchange of stories, traded experiences, and the opportunity to stretch across disciplines in order to draw connections between diverse practices. To approach the creative process in this collective way is both instinctual and logical. Why not extend and strengthen the community, and make beautiful things while doing it?

DOMA LUNA COLLABORATION

In collaboration with metalsmith Diana O’Connor, the Doma Luna collection is a spherical reflection of lunar influence and duality. Oil pigments harvested and mixed by Anong Beam of M’Chigeeng First Nation are set into the hollows of each piece. The contrast of the full versus new moon is illustrated in high relief via opaque paints which mirror the moon incognito, smooth and obsidian, and on full display, a textured gaussian glow.

STILL THE SEA

A renewal of our seminal pieces, Still The Sea marries the movement and spectacle of a marine landscape with the practice of adornment. Silks bathed in natural dyes carry hues of earthly origin. Each braid is composed on a circular loom in Japanese tradition and gilded with bronze or sterling silver components for daily or ceremonial wear.

To present still the sea, we worked with photographer & friend Senecca Dawn on a series of intimate self portraits, documenting the collection in a journalistic reflection.
